Aventura is a suburban city in the northeast section of Miami-Dade County. Aventura, from the Spanish word for "adventure" started out being exactly that until it was incorporated in 1995 as the City of Aventura. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, the area known as Biscayne Gardens, was mostly swampland, and the later developments with numerous high-rise condo buildings made Aventura one of the most sought-after, recognized destinations in the world. The City has its own manager-city commission government, comprising a city manager, who is the city executive, a major, and six commissioners that make up the city commission or legislature. The City also has its own Police Department, which was formed in 1997.
Located in the center of the city is the enormous, famous, and trendy Aventura Mall. The mall is a 2.4 million square foot indoor shopping center, with over 250 world-class shops. The huge success of the mall not only encouraged the Aventura community to grow, but caused a major expansion to include major department stores such as Nordstrom, Bloomingdale's, Macy's, JCPenney, Sears, Equinox, a 24-screen AMC movie theater, and numerous eateries and restaurants with a large selection of cuisines.
Other shopping is easily accessible at Loehmann's Fashion Island, a 190,000 square foot, open-air mall, adjacent to the Williams Island Resort Community, with 32 retail shops, five restaurants, and anchored by Publix Supermarket, Barnes and Noble, and Loehmann's. In addition, across from the Aventura Hospital, is the Aventura Commons, a strip mall opened in 1998, and anchored by several large chains such as Target and Best Buy; and the attractive Shoppes at the Waterways, beautifully landscaped with palm trees on the intracoastal waterway, with an exclusive selection of 29 shops including boutiques, galleries, antiques, beauty salons, cafes, and restaurants. Other shopping sites are The Promenade Shops, Champion Retail Plaza, The Aventura Shopping Center, Aventura Plaza, Biscayne Retail Plaza, Concorde Plaza, all of which have specialty and convenience stores for all your household and living necessities.
Educationally, Aventura is supported by the Miami-Dade County Public Schools system. In 2008, the City of Aventura opened its first public school, the Aventura Waterways K-8 Center. Other schools serving Aventura include Virginia A. Boone Highland Oaks Elementary, Greynolds Park Elementary, Ojus Elementary School, Highland Oaks Middle School, North Miami Beach High, and Dr. Michael Krop High School.
There are several parks offering activities and special events throughout Aventura. Founders Park, comprises 12 acres of exercise trails, tennis courts, playgrounds, and open fields for baseball, softball, football, and soccer; Founders Park Bayside is crisscrossed by tropically landscaped walkways, and a bay walk that overlooks the Intracoastal Waterway; The Don Soffer Exercise Trail, is a 3-mile exercise path, popular to walk, run, jog, rollerblade, and bike; Waterways Park; Waterways Dog Park; and Veterans Park, just to name a few.
The announcement of a new Aventura Arts & Cultural Center, located east of Biscayne Boulevard on NE 188 Street, is an exciting new landmark for Aventura. This elegant, high-tech center, situated on a beautiful, waterfront setting in the heart of Aventura, features a variety of performing arts, musicals, cultural programs, and entertainment for all ages.
